All lessons are 4-hour lessons taught from 8AM-12PM. This is due to the increasing wind strength throughout the afternoon. For your safety, lessons must be held in the calm of the morning. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this.
We here in the Northern California San Francisco Bay Area are very blessed to have great weather and excellent hills and mountains for Hang Gliding. East Bay Hang Gliding teaches the most modern and safest techniques and keeps people in a positive learning environment where we learn best. Our hang gliding program in Milpitas, CA is designed around a step-by-step learning process that locks the skills in place and forces them to become a habit. This way you will quickly become reaction based and feel the hang glider moving.
Learning to hang glide is easier than you could have ever possibly imagined. The biggest challenge on day 1 is getting over your own fears. We constantly remind our hang gliding pilots to relax and let the glider soar itself. You’re not trying to force it to do anything, you’re trying to go along with it. The glider was designed to fly perfectly and it is you who will mess the whole thing up! So, let that hang glider soar and enjoy the experience!
After your first flight or two, the sensory overload will go away. You will really relax into the flight and start to feel the hang glider and hear what she is saying to you. This is where we start to make our progress!
We are commonly asked “how hard is it to learn?” “Will I actually fly on our first hang gliding lesson?” “How high will we get?” It’s EASY! YES, you will be flying in our first hour of arriving at the park! And, we launch from as high as 60ft on day one! There is no other way to learn to hang glide than by running off the hill side, and as long as your mental attitude is to run and not stop running… well then, basic physics take over and the glider flies!
Hang gliding is all about technique. That technique is simple. You have already done this a thousand times in your life. Can you walk? How about jog? And run? Well then, you have already mastered the basics of the launch! What’s the trick you ask? Keep that body UPRIGHT! And we are going to teach you exactly how to do that every time.
Well, now you are in the sky and you’re soaring. So, what do we do next you ask? Pull yourself to where you want to go. Yes, it’s just that easy! You see hang gliding is all about energy retention. You must build energy to use energy. So, pull then release, and the glider will make the turn for you.
Now, its time to land, the inevitable part of our flight. Hold on and scream for dear life!!!! Hahaha! Quiet the exact opposite really. Again, relax and let the glider soar itself. The glider will come in and slide on a cushion of air, much like a hovercraft, at that time it will slow down so you can jog out your landing. The trick is to let the glider do this. If you tense up and hold onto the glider you will “cut” through this cushion of air and come in rolling on the wheels. But, if you believe and try NOT to touch it you can jog out your landing every time!
Our first day will be all about you. You will need to control your own emotions. You will need to trust that the glider will fly you. You will need to relax! And this is the big secret to hang gliding! Not really a secret at all is it? We will cover all this and more in our first lesson. We will apply these techniques in a very simple step-by-step manner. Once you have gained the confidence in yourself and the hang glider the sky really is the limit, and you will be rewarded with the wonderful gift of human powered flight.
Come join us for your first hang gliding lesson at our Milpitas, CA location. You will never forget it and you will wish you had done it years ago!
